700 × 467Brunswick Auto Mart is dedicated to ensuring that our customers always have their Jeep® vehicles running in top condition. Today we want to talk about one of the most important parts of your Jeep Cherokee: the battery. It can be a very fickle thing, so it pays to make sure you know what can affect its longevity and judge when it’s time to replace your car battery.

There are several different factors that can affect a car battery’s performance, and a couple aren’t something you can control. The weather, or more specifically, the temperature, is the easiest example. Your battery degrades faster in hot weather than it would in colder temps. While that’s a clear red flag when we go into summer, conditions inside the vehicle can also be problematic. If the battery is too close to your engine block, it can easily get overheated and degrade. You can expect car batteries in constantly cold conditions to last five or more years, but with consistently hot conditions, you’re looking at three years, give or take.

One thing you can control is your driving habits. Everyone knows that if you sit in your vehicle with the radio on and the engine off for too long, your battery will die, but it’s less common knowledge that driving a lot of short distances with a lot of battery draining features (infotainment, AC, heated seats) can have the same battery-killing effect. If you find yourself doing that a lot, try sitting somewhere with the engine on to let your battery catch up.

But if you really want to have peace of mind, then it’s best to come in for scheduled monthly maintenance at our Brunswick Jeep service center! Our trained technicians will make sure that your battery is holding a charge and looking good. If it isn’t, we’ve got plenty of fresh batteries to help you be on your way.
